BigBlueButton is an open-source virtual classroom system designed for real-time audio, video, and collaborative communication. It functions as a server-based web application that enables instructors to deliver lessons and students to participate in remote learning environments. The system provides a centralized hub where educators can manage digital classrooms and students can access materials through a web browser.

The software supports various educational formats, including one-to-one online tutoring, flipped classrooms, group collaboration, and one-to-many online classes. It is deployed on Ubuntu 22.04 servers using a dedicated installation script called bbb-install.sh, which automates the setup process for the server environment. This deployment model allows institutions to maintain full control over their data and session management.

Key features

  • Real-time audio and video streaming
  • Screen sharing and slide presentation
  • Multi-user whiteboards with annotations
  • Integrated chat and emoji reactions
  • Polling tools for student engagement
  • Breakout rooms for small group work
  • Shared notes for collaborative documentation
  • Session recording and playback
  • Learning Analytics Dashboard for moderators

BigBlueButton utilizes WebRTC for low-latency communication and includes a default front-end called GreenLight to manage user access and room creation. The system provides a comprehensive API that allows it to be integrated into larger learning management systems or custom portals. During active sessions, the software generates specific analytics that are visible to moderators via a dedicated dashboard, allowing for the tracking of student participation and engagement levels in real time.

The architecture is designed to handle the specific demands of synchronous online education, focusing on tools that facilitate active learning rather than passive listening. By combining presentation tools with interactive elements like shared notes and polling, the software creates a structured environment for remote instruction.

This software provides a self-hosted infrastructure for organizations and educators who require a dedicated virtual classroom environment with integrated administrative tools.
