Cap

Cap is an open-source desktop app that allows users to record their screen and webcam. It is available as a desktop application for macOS and Windows, paired with a web dashboard for managing and sharing recordings. The software is designed for product demos, bug reports, tutorials, and asynchronous team communication, serving as a replacement for scheduling live calls when showing work is more efficient.

Users can choose between two primary recording workflows depending on their needs. Instant Mode uploads video while recording to provide a shareable link immediately upon completion, which is intended for fast feedback and async updates. Studio Mode records locally and provides a set of editing tools for polishing the final output before exporting or sharing, making it suitable for client work and official product launches.

For teams requiring complete data ownership, the entire stack including the API, database, and media server can be deployed on private infrastructure using Docker Compose, Railway, or Coolify. The desktop app can then be pointed to a specific self-hosted server URL in the settings.
