HomeGallery is an open-source application that allows users to browse personal photos and videos via a self-hosted web interface. It is designed for users who store media on local hardware, such as a NAS, and prefer to avoid cloud services for privacy reasons. The software supports multiple media source directories and provides a mobile-friendly experience through PWA support.

Key features include an endless photo stream with virtual scrolling, video transcoding, and AI-driven discovery tools. The application performs face detection and recognition to group similar faces and offers reverse image lookup to find visually similar photos without manual tagging. It also includes geo-location reverse lookups to convert coordinates into addresses. HomeGallery identifies media by content, meaning duplicate files are processed only once, and it supports read-only or offline media sources by generating previews and extracting metadata once.

Users can install HomeGallery as a prebuilt binary for Linux, macOS, and Windows, or deploy it as a Docker image. It can run on low-power hardware, including Raspberry Pi. The system allows for the export of static web gallery sites and metadata to XMP sidecar files, and it supports streaming to Chromecast enabled devices.
