NextcloudPi is an open-source server distribution and installer designed for hosting a private cloud on small boards and virtual machines. It provides a pre-configured environment that bundles the necessary dependencies and tools to deploy a cloud storage instance without requiring manual software installation. The project focuses on providing a ready-to-use experience for users who want to maintain their own data on low-power hardware.

The software is available as ready to use images for Raspberry Pi, Odroid HC1, Rock64, and other ARM boards, as well as x86-64 systems. It can be deployed as a full disk image, within LXD and LXC containers, or via an installation script on Debian based systems. This flexibility allows it to run on physical hardware or within virtualization platforms like Proxmox using community scripts or official LXC images.

Key features

  • Web panel and TUI configuration interface for system setup
  • Automatic security updates and Let's Encrypt HTTPS certificates
  • Fail2Ban protection and UFW firewall integration
  • Dynamic DNS support for providers including DuckDNS and Namecheap
  • BTRFS support with automatic snapshots and sync
  • Integrated backup and restore functionality for Nextcloud
  • Samba and NFS support for local network file sharing
  • SMART hard drive health monitoring
  • ModSecurity Web Application Firewall

The system is built on Debian and includes a stack consisting of Apache with HTTP2, PHP 8.1, MariaDB, and Redis for memory caching. It includes specific optimizations such as APCu and Zend OPcache to improve performance on low-resource hardware. To ensure stability and security, it incorporates HSTS, Cron jobs for system maintenance, and security audits via Lynis and Debsecan. Users can manage the server through a dedicated web interface on port 4443 or via the command line using the ncp-config tool, which handles tasks like USB drive mounting and RAM log configuration.

This distribution is intended for users seeking a turnkey solution for self-hosting cloud storage on single-board computers or lightweight virtualized environments.
