nheko is an open-source native desktop client for the Matrix protocol. It is designed to function as a mainstream chat application rather than a traditional IRC client, providing a familiar interface for decentralized communication across various networks. The software focuses on providing a native experience that avoids the overhead often associated with web-based wrappers.

The application is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows. On Linux, it is distributed via Flatpak and is available in numerous distribution repositories including Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Gentoo, Mageia, and openSUSE. Windows users can install it via MSIX or Chocolatey, while macOS users can utilize Homebrew or a standard disk image. The installation process on Linux often integrates with system-level package managers for easier updates.

Key features

  • End-to-end encryption for secure messaging
  • VoIP support for voice and video calls
  • File and emoji sharing with inline widgets
  • Custom stickers and emoji image packs
  • Message redaction and read receipts
  • Room management including creating, joining, and leaving
  • Light, Dark, and System theme options
  • D-Bus API for third-party plugin integration on supported platforms
  • Room switcher accessible via keyboard shortcuts

Built using Qt and C++20, nheko requires a secret server to function, such as KDE Wallet or GNOME Keyring, to manage sensitive credentials securely. It supports basic communities and provides typing notifications and username auto-completion to streamline conversations. The architecture allows for the creation of separate profiles via the command line using specific flags. For media playback on Windows, the application may require external video codecs to be installed on the host system. It also supports the use of image packs for stickers, which can be managed privately or shared within specific rooms if the user has the necessary permissions.

This tool is a lightweight, native desktop option for users who prefer a traditional chat experience over web-based Matrix clients.
