Owncast

Owncast is an open-source application that allows individuals to run their own live video streaming and chat server. It provides a self-hosted environment where the broadcaster maintains full ownership over their content, user interface, and audience moderation. The software includes a built-in chat system and a web-based player for viewers, ensuring that the entire broadcasting experience remains under the control of the operator rather than a third-party provider.

The server is compatible with any broadcasting software that uses the RTMP protocol, which is the standard used by most major live streaming services. This compatibility allows users to point existing software such as OBS, Streamlabs, or Restream toward their own Owncast instance without needing to change their local production workflow. The technical architecture consists of a backend written in Go and a frontend developed with React, which handles the player, chat interface, and embed components.

Installation is primarily designed for Linux servers to ensure stability and performance. Windows users can still deploy the application by utilizing the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL2). Users have the option to deploy the service as a single unit that works out of the box for a quick start, or they can build the project from source by configuring the Go backend and React frontend separately. This approach allows for deeper customization of the streaming environment and the underlying infrastructure.

Owncast is positioned as a decentralized tool for streamers who seek independence from mainstream streaming platforms.
