RecipeSage

Collaborative recipe management with meal planning, smart shopping lists, and automated imports from web URLs.

RecipeSage is an open-source, self-hosted web application for recipe management, meal planning, and shopping list organization. It allows users to store a digital collection of recipes and coordinate household food management through a shared interface. The software is deployed as a server-based application and functions as a Progressive Web App, enabling installation on mobile home screens and offline access to searchable recipe collections. This ensures that users can access their culinary data even without an active internet connection.

Users can populate their database by importing data from web URLs, images, PDFs, or text. The application includes tools for organizing meals on a calendar and generating categorized shopping lists based on selected recipes. It also provides utilities for adjusting ingredient quantities and converting measurement units within recipe instructions. The system supports rich text formatting, allowing for the inclusion of bold text, italics, tables, and embedded images within ingredients and notes.

Key features

  • Automatic recipe imports from URLs, images, PDFs, and text
  • Nutrition tracking for calories, macros, vitamins, and minerals
  • Drag and drop meal planning with printable schedules
  • Categorized shopping lists that combine similar items
  • Recipe scaling and conversion between metric and imperial units
  • Full-text search across all recipe fields including misspellings
  • Tagging and labeling system for recipe categorization

The application is built using a monorepo architecture and utilizes Prisma and TRPC for its backend. It supports multi-user collaboration, allowing families or friends to share recipe collections and coordinate meal plans in real time. For deployment, the project provides preconfigured Docker Compose files to simplify the self-hosting process. The software also includes a built-in AI cooking assistant that provides suggestions for substitutions, techniques, and recipe ideas. To maintain data portability, the system allows users to back up their entire collection into portable formats.

RecipeSage is dual-licensed, available under the AGPL-3.0 license for non-commercial use and via a separate license for commercial applications.
