Technitium DNS Server is an open-source application that functions as both an authoritative and recursive DNS server. It allows users to self-host domain name resolution to manage network privacy and security. The software is deployed as a server and is managed through a web-based admin console accessible via any modern browser, which includes a dark mode for the interface.

The application is used to block ads and malware at the DNS level across an entire network. It supports various encrypted transport protocols to prevent ISPs from monitoring, blocking, or redirecting DNS traffic. Users can deploy the software on Windows, Linux, macOS, or Raspberry Pi, with an official Docker image available for containerized environments. It works out-of-the-box with minimal configuration required for basic operation.

Key features

  • Supports DNS-over-TLS, DNS-over-HTTPS, and DNS-over-QUIC protocols
  • Blocks ads and malware using configurable block list URLs
  • Includes a built-in DHCP server for multiple networks
  • Provides a clustering feature to manage multiple server instances from one console
  • Implements DNSSEC validation with RSA, ECDSA, and EdDSA algorithms
  • Features persistent caching that saves data to disk during restarts
  • Supports Single Sign-On via OpenID Connect and TOTP two-factor authentication
  • Offers a built-in HTTP API for third-party configuration and control

Built on .NET, the server utilizes async IO to handle high request volumes on commodity hardware, capable of serving millions of requests per minute. It includes advanced caching mechanisms such as prefetching and serve stale to reduce latency. The software supports a wide array of record types, including SVCB, HTTPS, and DNAME, and provides specialized tools like CNAME cloaking and QNAME minimization. It is designed for home networks and organizational environments that require detailed DNS logs, statistics, and granular control over internal zone management, including support for primary, secondary, and stub zones.

This tool provides a comprehensive suite for network administrators seeking a self-hosted solution for DNS and DHCP management.
