Temporal

A durable execution platform that manages failures and retries to ensure reliable execution of long running workflows.

Temporal is an open-source durable execution platform for workflow orchestration. It allows developers to build scalable applications by executing units of application logic called Workflows in a resilient manner. The software is deployed as a server that manages the state and execution of these processes, ensuring that operations are completed even in the event of intermittent failures or network instability.

The system operates by automatically handling retries and managing long-running processes that may span days, weeks, or months. It is used as a microservice framework to orchestrate complex distributed systems where reliability is critical. Users interact with the platform through a dedicated CLI for administrative tasks, a web-based user interface for monitoring workflow execution, and SDKs that allow the definition of Workflows, Activities, and Workers in preferred programming languages.

Key features

  • Automatic handling of intermittent failures and retries
  • Durable execution of long-running application logic
  • Support for multiple programming languages including Go and Java
  • Dedicated CLI for namespace and workflow management
  • Web UI for visualizing and monitoring active workflows
  • Local development environment via pre-built images
  • Scalable architecture for distributed system orchestration
  • State management for complex workflow sequences

Temporal originated as a fork of Uber's Cadence and is maintained by Temporal Technologies. The architecture separates the Temporal server, which handles orchestration and persistence, from the Workers that execute the actual application code. This design allows developers to focus on business logic while the platform manages the underlying infrastructure complexity, such as timeouts, state persistence, and network issues. It is intended for software engineers and architects building microservices that require guaranteed execution of a sequence of steps without manual intervention during failures.

By abstracting the complexities of distributed state, the platform enables the creation of reliable service buses and cron job schedulers. It provides a structured way to manage asynchronous tasks across different services in a microservices architecture. This makes it suitable for high-reliability environments where data consistency and process completion are mandatory.

Temporal serves as a backend orchestrator for developers who need reliable workflow management and durable execution in distributed environments.
