Thorium Reader is an open-source desktop app that serves as a cross-platform EPUB reading application. It is designed for Windows 10/10S, MacOS, and Linux, allowing users to manage and read electronic publications on various screen sizes. The application provides a dedicated environment for importing and organizing digital libraries without requiring a subscription or account.

The application focuses on accessibility and privacy, containing no advertisements and ensuring that no private data is transmitted externally. It is built using the Readium Desktop toolkit and is localized into 28 different languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, and Chinese, to support a global user base. Users can import books from local directories or connect to external catalogs via OPDS feeds to expand their reading collections.

Key features

  • Import e-books from local directories or OPDS feeds
  • Customization of layout settings for different screen sizes
  • Navigation via table of contents or page lists
  • Bookmark management for tracking reading progress
  • Accessibility support for NVDA, JAWS, and Narrator
  • Support for LCP Basic Encryption Profile publications
  • Command line interface for importing and opening files
  • Proxy server support via HTTPS_PROXY and HTTP_PROXY variables

The software is developed using Electron, React, and TypeScript, employing a Redux-saga architecture to handle application behavior and side effects. It utilizes a model-controller and view structure distributed across a Node.js main process, a library window, and multiple reader windows. This architecture allows for a separation of the library management interface from the actual reading experience. The application also includes a command line tool that allows users to import EPUB or LCPL files and search for imported publications by title directly from the terminal.

Thorium Reader is a privacy-focused, accessible document manager for users who require a standardized EPUB3 reader across different desktop operating systems.
