Spoolman is a self-hosted web service for managing 3D printer filament spools and monitoring their usage. It functions as a centralized inventory database that tracks filament types, manufacturers, and individual spool weights. The application is deployed as a server and accessed via a web-based client, allowing users to maintain a digital record of their physical material stock.

The software integrates with 3D printing controllers to automate the tracking process. When connected to compatible software, it updates spool weights in real time as prints progress, reducing the need for manual weighing. This allows users to maintain an accurate record of remaining materials across multiple printers simultaneously, ensuring that print jobs do not fail due to unexpected filament depletion.

The system also supports the Model Context Protocol via an MCP server, which enables inventory management through AI assistants like Claude. Users can customize their data collection by adding custom fields to spool entries to track specific properties of their materials. To assist with accessibility, the interface is available in 18 different languages through contributions via Weblate.

The architecture supports various database backends to suit different deployment scales, from simple SQLite setups to more complex PostgreSQL or CockroachDB clusters. By combining a web interface with a programmable API, the software allows for both manual inventory audits and fully automated consumption tracking.
